Design Thesis Guide
Guidelines to Govern the Submission Procedures and Format for the Written
Material to Accompany an M.F.A. Creative Project in Drama.
Submission Procedures:
- Each project performed to fulfill the requirements for
DRAM 7210 must be accompanied by a written document either
as part of the project as in the case of playwriting) or as commentary on
the project (as in acting). Each area of concentration has specific requirements
as to the content of the written document.
- A review committee will be established at the time the
creative project is initially selected. This committee consists of the student's
major professor and two other faculty members, one who is usually from outside
the student's immediate area of concentration. These committee members are
available for consultation throughout the planning and performance of the
creative project, and they will conduct the final oral examination.
- The written document should circulate for approval and
suggested changes far enough ahead of the final oral to allow a final draft
to circulate three days prior to the scheduled oral.
- The final oral examination is scheduled by the Graduate
Coordinator of the Department on request from the student's major professor.
It should take place as soon after completion of the creative project as feasible.
- The final version of the written document should be presented
at the final oral, at which time the members of the committee sign it.
Format:
- The title page follows the format
illustrated. Normally, an acting project should include the role played as well as the
title of the play and the author. The phrase "An Acting Project," "A Scene
Design Project," "A Costume Design Project," "A Directing Project," or "An
Original Play" should follow the title where appropriate.
- The second page is the approval page.
- The text of the document should be double-spaced. Ample margins
should be allowed, at least an inch and a half on the left margin and an inch on
the other three sides.
- All questions of style, footnote and bibliographic form should be
resolved by reference to the MLA Style Manual, 3rd Edition.
- The final version must be permanently bound. Simple plastic
covers or clasp binders are not acceptable. This bound and signed copy will
be retained in the department as a record of the student's work.
- Illustrations may be included in the text or added as appendices.
