Design & Technology Undergraduate Study

The Department of Drama and Theatre offers the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Drama. The law school recognizes a B.A. in drama as an appropriate degree for pre-law majors.

Admission:

In order to be admitted to the B.A. Degree, the student must meet the entrance requirements of the University and the requirements for students entering a senior major field in the College of Arts and Sciences. For a review of these requirements the student should consult the University Bulletin or discuss the matter with his or her academic advisor.

Degree Requirements:

The department of drama and theatre offers the bachelor of arts (B.A. Degree) in drama. The B.A. degree is designed to offer a liberal arts education with an emphasis in drama. After satisfying a basic core of drama courses, the student may concentrate in acting, media, film studies, writing, or design.

All undergraduate drama majors at the University of Georgia must complete the following core of drama courses: DRAM 2040, 2050, 3200, 3210, 3290, 3300, 3500, 5053, and seven three-hour courses in drama numbered 3000 or above. DRAM 2040, 2050, 3300, and 3500 should be completed by the sophomore year in order to avoid difficulties in scheduling advanced drama courses. Theatre history courses are not to be taken before the junior year.

Drama Course Requirements for a B.A. Degree:

DRAM 2040, 2050 Applied Drama 2 hours
DRAM 3300 Foundations of Performance Design 3 hours
DRAM 3500 Acting I: Foundations of Acting 3 hours
DRAM 3200 Foundations of Theatre Drama 3 hours
DRAM 3210 Foundation of Modern Theatre History 3 hours
DRAM 3290 Script Analysis 3 hours
DRAM 5053 Senior Seminar 1 hour

A minimum of 30 hours in DRAMA must be earned at the University of Georgia.

In addition to the core courses, the student majoring in drama must complete 18 hours in drama courses numbered above 3000. Students may only apply a maximum of 39 hours in drama towards the B.A. degree. Of these, only 3 hours may be courses numbered below 3000. DRAM 2000 may not be used as part of Drama major hours. DRAM 2000, 2120 and 2130 may be applied to the Regents core curriculum and as such do not count towards the 39 hours total for the drama major.

Students seeking the B.A. in drama are encouraged to take a broad base of varied drama courses. In addition to performance and design work, students are encouraged to take courses in history, theory, directing and scriptwriting. Students are encouraged especially to take DRAM 2120 or 2130 to apply to the Fine Arts requirement of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Undergraduate Advising:

All drama majors entering the University should contact the departmental program coordinator as soon as possible for an appointment with the department head. For the first 60 hours drama majors will be advised by the professional advisors in the College of Arts and Sciences. Upon completion of 60 hours the drama major will be assigned a drama faculty advisor.

Undergraduate Honors Programs:

For exceptional students the University maintains a special Honors Program. The Department of Drama participates in the Honors Program and students of the departmental undergraduate program may be Honors students. Please visit the Honors Program Website for information on admission.
