In the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn 1991, where Hasidic Jews and African Americans live side-by-side, a rabbi's car fatally struck a young black boy, igniting race riots and ultimately the revenge-killing of a visiting orthodox Jew from Australia in Central Park. This powerful, Obie Award winning docudrama explores the volatile situation from all sides by vividly reenacting interviews with eyewitnesses, neighborhood residents, politicians, and other public figures. The original production was a solo-performance, with playwright Anna Deavere Smith performing all the roles. Because the distinctive power of this play stems from the audience's ability to see a single actor embody a wide range of characters and embrace identities different from their own, in this production each of the 13 diverse actors in the cast performs a range of characters of differing genders and races, and often multiple actors portray the same character.
