Department Colloquium: Gilbert Laumord

Gilbert Laumord is the artistic director for the Siyaj Company. He studied at the National School of Dramatic Arts in Denmark from 1975-1978. He started his stage-acting career in Europe, then returned to Guadeloupe in the 1980s in order to rediscover his roots and encounter other cultures of the Caribbean. He became acquainted with the musical and chorographical practice of gwoka, and rediscovered the universe of creole tales, which he progressively integrated into his work as an actor, dancer, musician, and stage director. In 2008, Gilbert Laumord received the Prix Mackandal at the Festival Barrio Cuento, under the direction of Alberto Curbelo, for his contributions to Caribbean culture. In 2001, he founded the Siyaj Company with Elvia Gutiérrez (creative director). In 2009, Maryse Condé wrote for him the play Comme deux frères (Like two brothers), which was performed at the Live Arts in Charlottesville in October 2009. He created and staged Chante moi un conte, conte moi une chanson (Sing me a tale, tell me a song), which was staged in multiple countries. In 2012, he was chosen by Luis Alberto Lamata to play the role of President Pétion in the film Bolivar El Hombre de las dificuldates produced by Venezuelan production company Villa del Cine.
